Design of a Wireless Medical Monitoring System

In the proposed project we are developing a Monitoring Terminal to detect the real-time body temperature, heart rate and other physiological information of the patient and sends them to the control center.


Presently the quick development of information processing and wireless data transmission technology, the research of wireless Medical Monitoring System by using the biomedical sensors is more famous. We can increase the efficiency of the modern management of hospitals and enlarge the free space of patients by using the wireless technique to send information between medical sensor and monitoring control center.


In this process we will detect real-time body temperature, heart rate and other physiological information of a patient with the help of biomedical sensor. The design of wireless monitoring terminal and the system software development are the main core of wireless medical monitoring system.

  • Sensor module – is used for getting medical information from the outside and then converts that information to digital signals.
  • Control module – is used to control the sensors, coordinates the task of different modules, runs communication protocols and processes data.
  • Wireless communication module – is used to transfer information.

Presently, there are different types of wireless communication protocols. The transmission of signals such as heart rate, body temperature and other physiological information of a patient is the main task of a monitoring terminal and calling the signals in data traffic is not so heavy. Moreover patient wears the monitoring terminal, which requires power to be supplied by battery, it puts a maximum demand on the reducing power dissipation of wireless transmission module. In this paper we selected the Zig Bee technology as the wireless communication protocol by considering these comprehensive factors. Zig Bee technology is a wireless communication technology having short range, low-power and low-rate


A wireless technology which is guided by IEEE 802.15.4 Personal Area Network standard is called Zigbee technology. It is developed to replace the existing non-standard technologies and is used for the wide range of controlling applications. Presently, it operates in the 2.4GHz ISM bands Worldwide at a maximum data-rate of 250kbps, 868 MHz band at a data rate of 20Kbps in Europe and 914MHz band at 40kbps in USA. The user’s truncation is verified by this technology.

Advantages of ZIG BEE communication are:

  • The amount of noise added in the other wireless communications is very high when compared with ZIG BEE communication.
  • Zigbee provides a noise free communication to its users.

After implementing this project, the monitoring terminal can check the heart rate and body temperature and other physical features of patient and sends that information to coordinator and then to surveillance center by using the wireless network.
